In 2002, Seth and Joy moved from Southern California to Lawton, Oklahoma to become the first full-time staff to join Founder Kent Susud in SportQuest Ministries. After several years of leading short-term teams to various locations, they felt God calling them to move to Belgium in 2006. After five years of helping to deepen and expand the SportQuest Belgium team’s impact in that country, they once again felt led to pack it all up and return to their hometown of Valley Center, California, where they hadn’t lived in over ten years. At the time, they were not exactly sure what it would look like to start SportQuest in their hometown, but they prayed that God would connect them with the right people. Within two weeks of arriving, they met Tony Suitor, Children’s Pastor of a local church. Tony also had a heart to use sport as a way to share Christ’s love with youth in the community, and he had been praying for over three years that God would connect him with others who had the same desire. Since then, a great partnership has been formed that has impacted the lives of hundreds of youth in Valley Center.
SQ San Diego Coordinator and Webmaster
Seth coaches high school tennis and has organized a tennis academy that provides specialized private lessons for youth, which also gives him the opportunity to be a spiritual mentor and example. Joy started the SportQuest San Diego Volleyball Club, which includes four competitive teams. Joy personally coaches one of the teams, but her relationship with these girls goes way beyond the volleyball court as she opens her home and her heart to them as well. Together, Seth and Joy also serve the youth ministry in their local church. Each summer they organize the SportQuest San Diego PWP Project in partnership with Tony and Valley Center Community Church, through which more than 200 hundred youth discover and encounter God through the ministry of our SportQuest teams.
Seth is now focused on building a local ministry team and investing in local leaders to whom he can give ownership of certain aspects of their ministry. He will be starting a Discipleship Huddle in the Fall that seeks to model and train others in how to grow personally to be more like Christ while effectively making disciples of Christ. Seth is also developing his partnership with the local church in hopes of integrating the youth ministry with his own year-round follow-up efforts. Seth and Joy also have a desire to see the SportQuest model spread to other parts of Southern California.
