Hola y bienvenido a Cuba! We are very excited for you to join us during your J-Term as we partner with local churches to serve youth through the tool of sports. Thank you for stepping out in faith to come to Cuba! We are excited to see how God will use this upcoming project to build His Kingdom here.                                — a message from your Project Leaders

Here are your Project Leaders in Cuba:

Kent and Michelle Susud

Kent and Michelle began the ministry of SportQuest in 1998 — twenty years ago!  Since that time, God has used the small seeds of their faith to produce an enormous harvest of changed lives, transformed communities, and strong leaders.  In 2013, Kent also launched the ministry of the 4th Musketeer USA to give inspiration to every man’s heart and send out worldwide waves of justice. Today they continue to give leadership to these ministries, SQ and 4M, and also the global sport ministry movement while raising their family.  Their two oldest boys, Jacob and Luke, attend Covenant Christian High School and will travel to Cuba as well. Their daughter, Holland, is a 6th grader and will join the family for her first overseas SportQuest project. The Susud’s look forward to serving the CCHS team and the youth and churches in Cuba.

Oscar Peña

A native of Venezuela, Oscar has a radical testimony of how God transformed his life.  Make sure you ask him to tell you the story while you’re in Cuba together! Oscar and his wife, Cirimar, just had their first child — Jesiah, a girl — this summer.  Together Oscar and Cirimar give leadership to the SportQuest teams in Venezuela and provide coaching and training for sport ministry leaders around Latin America. Oscar has been to Cuba many times, and it’s because of his relationship with Cuban leaders that this trip is taking place.  Oscar is full of joy and fun to be around. He loves to serve and has a big heart to see God heal brokenness in our world.

Aben Alvarez

Aben lives in Havana with his wife, Claudia, and they have a daughter, Ailín.  Aben loves soccer and baseball, but, as a kid, he also practiced judo and swimming.  He got involved in sport ministry in 2008 when a friend asked him to serve in a sports camp.  Since then he’s been involved on many mission trips, served in orphanages in Cuba, coached a soccer team, and provided leadership for sport ministry teams in Cuba.  In 2011, he began coaching a community soccer team made up of orphans and children from dysfunctional families. Aben continues to serve the sport ministry movement in cities all over Cuba and, for the last 3 months, he has been in South Africa at the International Sports Leadership School and will graduate from there on October 5th.  He looks forward to returning home and spending time with his family!

Ashley (Fisk) Feister served with SportQuest in Belgium from 2004 - 2008. These were pivotal years in her life that laid a solid foundation for what God is calling her and her family to do today. Ashley and her husband, David, lead a discipleship program for young adults that combines hands-on farming, outdoor adventure, and deep biblical training called Planted Gap Year.

For Yackencys Domínguez Trías, enrolling her 10-year-old daughter Georgette Medina in a SportQuest soccer program resulted in several unexpected benefits. While watching her daughter practice, Yackencys saw a group of women exercising and learning about Christ. She wanted to join this community of women and decided to get involved. Today, Yackencys is part of the Vida Fitness Team and works out while Georgeth learns soccer skills. Both mother and daughter have embraced Christ and are becoming devout followers. More than 90 children participate in the SportQuest soccer academy and fitness program located in Maturin, Monagas in eastern Venezuela. SportQuest Partner Cesar Daniel Bermudez runs the program and has a dream that it will grow to serve 500 youth. Residents in this community face many challenges including poverty, dysfunctional homes, alcoholism, and drug addiction. “We have seen how the different sports and fitness programs have allowed children and their parents to play sports and go to church together,” Cesar says. “Children and youth play sports and are discipled. Mothers attend daily fitness training and learn the Word of God. Fathers are invited to participate in games to connect with their children and also to learn about the Lord. As a result, several participants have made their confession of faith, have been baptized, and attend church regularly.” Santiago Salazar met Jesus through soccer. At 14 years old, in the middle of a biblical teaching, Santiago accepted Christ into his life. In December 2021, he was baptized and today he attends church on a consistent basis. As prepares to be a professional soccer player, he is also learning how to share his story and his love of Christ with others. Great things are happening in Venezuela through sports and fitness while learning about Christ. Praise God!
